Completing “How to Teach Number Sense” will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 1.2.2; 2.5.2; 3.5.2 and 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Research confirms that number sense is essential to mathematical understanding but what is number sense? and how can we teach it?  This practical one day course will teach participants how to use the principles of how children learn mathematics(2005) when using concrete resources, visual models, abstract symbols and mathematical language in order to develop number sense understanding.  Participants will learn how to talk mathematically and communicate clearly through the use of Number Talks and Numeracy Warm-ups.

Teachers will learn:

  1. What number sense is and how to embed it into quick daily numeracy routines within maths lessons.
  2. A wide variety of number sense activities and how to differentiate them to engage and develop the mathematical proficiency of all the students in their class.
  3. How to incorporate a wide variety of concrete materials and visual models into number sense routines, to help students develop conceptual understanding in maths.
  4. How to explicitly model and expect proficient use of maths language to help develop number sense
  5. How to develop questioning skills to engage, extend and support students understanding.

This is a very practical course, yet still based on the research of how children learn mathematics.  Teachers will be able to participate, discuss and reflect on how to implement the theory into their classroom practice.
